How much does heritage masonry repair cost in Adelaide?
We do not answer that with a price, because no government source read sets one. The list on the costs page gives each line with its source. See the rules and guidance we found, with their sources.
Do I need an authorised contractor to repoint a wall?
The Building Work Contractors Act 1995 bars carrying on business as a building work contractor except as authorised under it, and its definition of building work includes repairing and improving a building. No page read says in terms that repointing is covered, so ask who quotes which authority the work is done under.

The months the SA History Hub links to heat
Best months: Jan, Feb, Dec
The SA History Hub names January's maxima and summer. It says nothing about rain or masonry, so this is only a reading of which months the source ties to heat. That is not advice on when to repoint: ask the provider how the job is timed.
January maxima are such that the preference for coastal or hill-top living is unsurprising, with summer benefits realised by nineteenth century governors.

The months the SA History Hub links to rain
Avoid: Jun, Jul, Aug
The SA History Hub says most rain falls during winter in Adelaide's Mediterranean climate. Avoid here is this site's own reasoning, not the source's: if a wall will be open to rain during the job, put the question of weather to the provider before a date is set.
a climatic regime that he correctly identified as being Mediterranean, in which most rain falls during winter

Best and Avoid are this site's own reading of what the sources say about rain and heat, not any source's or regulator's advice. The sources do not say when masonry work should be done. Each period names its source and the date it was read.
Process
What does the guide say about repointing mortar?
The 2008 joint heritage guide to salt attack and rising damp (Heritage Council of NSW, Heritage Victoria, the South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage and Adelaide City Council) says: don’t use hard cement mortar to repoint failed lime mortar joints — that will just drive the damp further up the wall and may also damage the bricks.
What does it say about render and paint?
Ensure masonry walls are not rendered at the base with a strong impervious Portland cement mortar plinth to keep damp out. This only serves to trap moisture in the wall. Ensure old masonry walls are not painted, as this can trap the moisture and force it inside.
Timing
How quickly can someone get to me?
We cannot promise a time. It depends on the provider's bookings. Enquiries sent through the form or by phone are passed to a local provider, who contacts you directly.
Is there a best season for masonry work?
No source read for this site says when masonry work should be done. The season chart on this page shows only what two sources say about Adelaide's summers and winters; ask the provider how the job is timed.
Permits and approvals
Does repointing need approval?
It depends on the property. The State's guide to State Heritage Places lists masonry and plaster, re-pointing, underpinning, among the conservation, repair and remedial works that typically need development approval at a State Heritage Place or State Heritage Area. It is about State Heritage Places, not local heritage places. It says that if you are unsure what needs approval, it is recommended that you contact your Local Council planning officer.

Service area
Which suburbs do you cover?
Adelaide. Five pages are written around one or two heritage survey items each: Norwood, Kensington, Unley Park, Parkside and Brighton. The rest are covered on the same terms.
Do you do the work yourselves?
No. This site is run by a marketing company, which passes each enquiry to an independent licensed local provider. The provider inspects the wall, quotes and does any work itself; we hold no licence and do none of it.
Thanks — we have your enquiry. Someone will be in touch shortly. Prefer to talk now? Call (08) 8330 4909.
